The winner for our International Film Festival Promotion is this movie review by Jelte ten Holt on international art house title - 'Life is Beautiful'.

La Vita e Bella , or Life is Beautiful in English, deserves the Oscars it received. This 1997 comic-holocaust movie (normally an oxymoron) uses understatement and humour - rather than shock and horror - to depict the Jews fate during WWII. Unexpectedly, this leads to a powerful and poignant story.

Lead character Guido, played by Roberto Benigni, has a quick wit and the gift of the gab. He uses these to turn the world around him on its head, winning many people's affection, both on and off the screen. However, the true power of his talent only comes to the fore in the second part of the movie when he and his family face the horrors of Nazi Germany. Guido not only manages to protect his son from the terror around them by weaving an illusionary world of words, but even manages to drag the audience along for most of the ride.

Of course eventually (inevitably?) the illusion crumbles and the audience is confronted with what it meant to be a Jew in WWII. By juxtaposing reality and fantasy, Life is Beautiful conveys life during WWII in a manner no other movie has managed.

Many movies about dark eras in history flounder, leaving the audience either unsatisfied or horrified. Life is Beautiful suffers no such problems, instead it seems to dance along the razor's edge of too much and too little. The lighthearted style of the movie does not weaken the message, nor strengthen it; instead it embodies it.

The Nazis destroyed lives and tried to destroy spirits. What this movie shows is that they can only do the second if you let them, and that with the right perspective, even in a life during WWII, you can show that la vita e bella.
